Dialogue with water

Maggie Taylor, Dialogue with Water, 2026, oil on canvas, 102 cm x 76 cm

This painting is about space, time and the mystical. I am within the landscape. Skies meet water above the Humber Bridge. Water is like time, you try to live in the present, but it always moves along. The shadows of the bridge catch the light, they are there, but not there, moving in tune with the tide. A bird’s eye view gives me the space for memories, thoughts and the mystical to creep in. It was early in the morning and there was a hazy mist on the horizon. This added to the sense of a surreal experience. I was suspended in the unknown, where time stood still, creating a mysterious and uncanny feeling within me.

“Studying art provides a platform, because the environment is partly a matter of perception. Art forms have something to tell us about the environment, because they can make us question reality” (Morton, 2012, p.8).
